What Are Professional Development Units (PDU)?
Professional Development Units (PDUs) are credits needed for renewal of the PMI certifications. Maintaining your PMI certification keeps you relevant and is a competitive advantage.
Every certification requires you to earn a specific amount of PDUs per three-year certification cycle. The requirements differ for each certification. The certification begins the day you pass the exam and/or multi-rater assessment and ends on the same date three years later. Typically, one PDU is earned for every one hour spent in a planned, structured educational activity or volunteering (Giving Back to the Profession). Fractions of PDUs may be reported in 0.25 increments of one full hour.
The PMI updated the program in December 2015 to include more emphasis on employer-demanded skills. In May 2022 the PMI Talent Triangle® further evolved. These changes provide the guidance you need to stay relevant and competitive in the profession. More information is available in the FAQs section of the PMI Talent Triangle®webpage.
